New customer acquisition shade finder quiz leads to increased product sales and market share.

Perricone MD was launching a new line of makeup products but had hopes for a different type of shopping experience. They aimed to reduce the shopper's reliance on traditional in-store color swatching which often takes time and is accessible only in proximity to retail locations. By launching an online shade-finder, Perricone MD could facilitate online purchase of the right products for first-time and returning customers without the need for in-store visits.

We designed a mobile-first customer acquisition tool, to serve as both a shade matching quiz and a marketing artifact accompanying product announcement emails.

Role

UX designer – collaborating with a principal designer and the marketing team at Perricone MD. I was responsible for:

  • Comprehensive analysis of shade finder experiences

  • Interactive prototype for usability testing

  • Analysis of user testing and design iterations

  • Detailed documentation of all screens and behavior

Impact

The Shade Finder quiz:

  • Enabled the launch of the No Makeup product line with an actionable online shopping experience

  • Reduced returns of the product because users bought the wrong shade

  • Served as a new user acquisition tool to grow brand recognition and engagement

  • Lead to more bundle sales on the e-commerce shop

  • Was optimized for users' mobile shopping patterns

This project was designed and developed while I was at Swim Studio, a boutique interaction design studio in San Francisco. The client was Perricone MD, a cosmetics and skincare company right at the moment when they announced a new line of makeup products geared towards a different target market.

Project overview

The project goal was to increase online makeup sales and reduce reliance on in-person color swatching.

The quiz asks 6 minimal but effective questions to find the shopper’s shade and offers exclusive product bundles and easy checkout.

It's an effective tool to reach to new customers via email and social media by prompting to "Find your shade match!"

This project was designed for mobile-first and is available on all web-responsive devices.

The mobile flow was tested with users new to Perricone MD to ensure usability.
